High-Viscosity Extrusion Polyamide Examid PA6 R40
Description
Examid® PA6 R40 is a high-viscosity extrusion grade of polyamide 6. Designation: R40 — relative viscosity η_rel ≈ 4.0 in 96 % H₂SO₄ (significantly higher than standard injection PA6 with η_rel 2.7–3.3). High melt viscosity is critical for processes where the material must hold its shape after leaving the extruder until it fully cools and crystallizes — extrusion of profiles, monofilaments, pipes and sheet, as well as rotational molding (rotomoulding) of large hollow parts.
The high-molecular-weight structure of PA6 R40 provides increased strength, wear resistance and resistance to repeated flexing — the material does not crack under cyclic loading even after long-term service. It is the workhorse for serial production of engineering PA6 semi-finished products in Ukraine and Europe.
Typical parameters: density ~1.13 g/cm³, η_rel ≈ 4.0, MFR <8 g/10 min (low — normal for extrusion), tensile strength 75–80 MPa (dry), tensile modulus 2.8–3.0 GPa, elongation at break 30–80 %, Charpy notched impact strength 4–5 kJ/m² at 23 °C, Tm 220 °C, continuous service temperature up to 90 °C dry. UL 94 V-2 (standard).
Key advantages
- High melt viscosity (η_rel ≈ 4.0) — stable shape retention during extrusion, minimal sagging, stable profile dimensions along the length
- High molecular weight — increased resistance to fatigue deformation, wear and repeated flexing
- High mechanical strength and stiffness — above standard injection-grade PA6 thanks to the longer molecular chain
- Resistance to oils, gasoline, diesel and dilute alkalis
- Good abrasion resistance — for parts with surface contact and wear
- Processable by profile and pipe extrusion, rotomoulding and blow molding
- Basic flame resistance UL 94 V-2 (self-extinguishing)
Limitations
- UL 94 V-2 — not for FR-critical applications
- The high water absorption of PA6 (~9 % at saturation) remains
- High viscosity requires higher processing temperatures and greater screw torque — injection molding requires powerful equipment and is only suitable to a limited extent (for injection, Promyde® B33L or Examid® PA6 NC are better choices)
- Continuous service above 90 °C is not recommended
Applications
- Monofilament extrusion: fishing lines, trimmer lines for garden equipment, brush filaments for industrial sweepers, braided technical ropes
- Profile and pipe extrusion: conveyor guides, technical profiles, protective tubing for harnesses, corrugated pipes, cable sheathing
- Rotational molding (rotomoulding): large hollow products — fuel tanks for special machinery, medium-size technical reservoirs, protective containers
- Blow molding: technical bottles and canisters for aggressive liquids, expansion tanks for cooling systems
- Sports equipment: tool handles and grips, protective guards, fitness equipment elements
- Insulation components: technical sheathing, extruded medium-duty insulators
- Gears and bearings (machined from rod/sheet): stock shapes for machining large gears, bushings and plain bearings
Global equivalents: BASF Ultramid® B40 / B45, Lanxess Durethan® B 35 F / B 40, DOMO Domamid® 35, Toray Amilan® CM1031M, Radici Radipol® A60. Examid® PA6 R40 is the MW position for serial-scale extrusion and rotomoulding applications.
