Polyphthalamide Examid® PPA GF40 HSL Reinforced with Glass Fiber
Description
Examid® PPA GF40 HSL — a structural polyphthalamide (PA6T/6I copolymer) with 40 % short glass fiber and a comprehensive modification package designated by the HSL suffix.
What the HSL suffix means
In the practice of global PPA manufacturers (Solvay Amodel, DuPont Zytel HTN, Toray Siveras, BASF Ultramid Advanced), the HSL suffix stands for HSL = Heat-Stabilized + Lubricated:
- HS — Heat Stabilized: improved resistance to thermal aging during long-term service at 150–200 °C, minimal loss of mechanical properties after 1000–3000 h in hot air or hot liquids.
- L — Lubricated: an internal package of processing lubricants (PE waxes, montan esters) for improved flow, shorter molding cycles and better surface detail reproduction on thin-walled and complex parts.
Within the Examid PPA family, the HSL series covers the GF33 and GF40 grades (everyday structural applications); the HLS series covers GF50 (higher reinforcement).
How Examid® PPA GF40 HSL differs from standard PA66 GF40
- Melting temperature ~310–325 °C versus ~260 °C for PA66 — real-world service at 170–200 °C under load, short-term up to 230 °C.
- Modulus stability under moisture absorption: PPA loses ~15 % of its modulus at moisture saturation, PA66 GF40 up to 50 %.
- HDT/A (1.8 MPa) ~290–305 °C — close to the melting point, unlike PA66 GF40 (~245 °C).
- Dimensional stability during lead-free reflow soldering (up to 260 °C, 30 s) without softening.
Advantages
- High strength and stiffness over a wide range of temperatures and humidity
- Dimensional stability under reflow soldering and in hot liquid media
- Creep resistance under sustained load at 120–180 °C
- Low moisture absorption and stable electrical properties in connectors
- High flow thanks to the L package — filling of thin 0.5–0.8 mm walls
- Resistance to glycols, oils, antifreezes, weak acids, aromatic fuels
- Fast molding cycle in water-heated molds at 140–160 °C (no oil heating system required)
Limitations — honestly
- High processing temperature (melt 320–340 °C) — requires a hot-runner system and corrosion-resistant components on the molding machine
- Moisture-sensitive before processing — mandatory drying at 120 °C for 4–8 h down to <0.08 %
- Cost 3–5 times higher than PA66 GF — justified where PA66 objectively cannot perform
- The base grade is rated UL 94 HB — separate FR grades are needed for V-0/V-2 applications
- Brittle failure is possible under high local loads — design for creep resistance, not impact energy
- Dark natural color (beige-brown) — pigmentation is possible, but the color palette is limited
Target applications
Automotive: turbo ducts, resonator housings, EGR components, thermostats, oil pump housings, EV high-voltage system connectors, ignition coil holders.
Electronics and electrical engineering: SMT connectors for lead-free reflow, relay housings, power module insulators, switch contact assemblies, 5G/mmWave antenna platforms.
Industry: hot-liquid pump housings, in-line flow sensors, fittings for heating systems and heat exchangers, components of high-power LED luminaires.
Household appliances: coffee machine parts (contact with hot water and steam), dishwasher assemblies, professional-grade blender housings.
Global equivalents
Parametrically comparable grades in the portfolios of leading manufacturers: Solvay Amodel® A-1140 HSL / AF-1140 HS (PPA copolymer, 40 % GF, heat stabilizer + lubricant), DuPont Zytel® HTN52G35HSL (PA6T/DT, 35 % GF, HS+L), EMS-Grivory Grivory® HT3-V4FWA (PA6T/6I, 40 % GF), BASF Ultramid® Advanced N3HG7 HSL (PA9T, 35 % GF), Toray Siveras® L1140V0 (an LCP alternative for the FR segment). Examid® PPA GF40 HSL is offered as a localized, technologically comparable solution with flexibility in minimum batch size, lead time and adaptation of the compound formulation to a specific project.
