Examid® PA66 GF30 — glass-filled, heat-stabilized polyamide 66

Description

Examid® PA66 GF30 — a 30 % glass-filled, heat-stabilized polyamide 66 from Material Wizard. An injection-molding compound based on PA66 (hexamethylenediamine adipate) with 30 % short-cut glass fiber and a heat-stabilizer package (Cu/I-based or phenolic) for continuous service at 120–150 °C, with short-term exposure up to 180 °C. The basic "workhorse" of engineering plastics — an optimal balance of stiffness, heat resistance, chemical resistance and cost for most technical parts.

Examid® PA66 series — family map

  • Examid® PA66 (unfilled) — base unfilled grade for technical parts
  • Examid® PA66 GF15/GF25 — low/medium reinforcement (stiffness/impact balance)
  • Examid® PA66 GF30 — the standard for engineering parts (this card)
  • Examid® PA66 GF50 — high-modulus grade for structural metal-replacement tasks
  • Examid® PA66 CF30/CF40 — carbon-fiber grades for electrical conductivity + stiffness
  • Examid® PA66 V-0 / V-2 — FR variants for electrical engineering

What heat stabilization provides

  • Continuous service at 120–150 °C: minimal degradation after 1000+ h in hot air (unstabilized PA66 loses 50 % of its mechanical properties after 500 h at 130 °C)
  • Color retention: no darkening or brittle zones in under-hood spaces and engine compartments
  • Dimensional stability in cycle testing: repeated -40 °C ↔ +140 °C cycles without deformation
  • Reflow stability: short-term up to 240 °C during lead-free soldering

Advantages

  • High stiffness (modulus ~10000 MPa) at moderate density (1.35-1.38 g/cm³)
  • Excellent wear resistance and low coefficient of friction against metal — for sliding assemblies
  • Outstanding chemical resistance to oils, gasoline, glycols, antifreeze and aromatic fuels
  • Resistance to cyclic fatigue loads (up to 10⁶ cycles at moderate stresses)
  • Good resistance to impact loads (Charpy notched ~10-13 kJ/m²)
  • Self-extinguishing after removal of the flame source (V-2 in an indicative test without FR additives)
  • Can be colored to any RAL/Pantone shade
  • Compliant with RoHS 2 (2011/65/EU + 2015/863), REACH SVHC compliant
  • FDA-compliant in the base formulation (food-contact versions on request)

Limitations — honestly

  • Water absorption of 1.5-2.5 % in 24 h (up to 6-8 % at saturation) — modulus loss of up to 30-50 % and dimensional growth. For humid environments use PA66 GF30 with a conditioned design, or PA12, or PPA.
  • Base grade is UL 94 HB — V-0 / V-2 require dedicated FR grades (Br + Sb or halogen-free)
  • Visible fiber on the surface (white streaks) of thin-walled parts — cosmetic surfaces require texturing or painting
  • Shrinkage anisotropy along fiber flow lines (longitudinal ~0.4 %, transverse ~1.2 %)
  • Mandatory drying before processing: 80 °C, 4-8 h to <0.1 % — otherwise bubbles, silver streaks and molecular weight reduction
  • Susceptible to hydrolysis in prolonged contact with hot water and steam >100 °C — choose a hydrolysis-resistant grade for water-contact applications
  • UV-unstable in the base formulation — a HALS+UVA package is added for outdoor use

Target applications

Automotive (under the hood): intake manifolds, air filter housings, brackets, engine oil pans, thermostat housings, fuel line guides (subject to FR requirements).

Electrical engineering: connector housings (no V-0 in the base grade), mounting bases, chassis for low-current systems, industrial-grade relay module housings.

Home appliances: internal structural components of washing machines and dishwashers, pump housings, fan bases, coffee machine components (without direct contact with hot water >90 °C).

Industry: pump housings, impellers, fittings for cold liquids, conveyor system brackets, power tool housings (without FR requirements).

Sports and leisure: bicycle and scooter frames and mounts, sports equipment housings, ski binding components, saddles and handlebar grips.
