Exablend® PPS GF40Y — 40 % glass-filled polyphenylene sulfide, V-0, balanced series
Description
Exablend® PPS GF40Y is a polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) based compound reinforced with 40 % glass fiber. It belongs to the “Y” series — balanced grades with a proven combination of properties at a moderate price. It is designed for a wide range of engineering applications that require high stiffness, stable mechanical performance, heat resistance and inherent flame retardancy.
The semi-crystalline PPS matrix combined with 40 % glass fiber provides a flexural modulus of 13 600 MPa, a tensile strength of 180 MPa, heat resistance of HDT/A 260 °C per ISO 75-2 (1.8 MPa) and a UL 94 V-0 flammability rating at 1.5 mm thickness without additional flame retardants. The grade has very low moisture absorption (≤0.02 %) and high dimensional stability under long-term thermal cycling.
The chemical resistance of PPS to most solvents, acids and alkalis is retained; each specific environment requires verification with regard to temperature and contact time.
Key properties
- Polyphenylene sulfide reinforced with 40 % glass fiber
- “Y” series — the standard technology line for series-production applications
- Inherent flame retardancy, UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm without halogenated or phosphorus flame retardants — RoHS/REACH compliant out of the box, suitable for lead-free reflow soldering up to 260 °C
- High heat resistance: HDT/A 260 °C per ISO 75-2 (1.8 MPa)
- High stiffness: flexural modulus 13 600 MPa
- Tensile strength 180 MPa, flexural strength 230 MPa
- Notched Izod impact strength 11 kJ/m² at 23 °C
- High chemical resistance to many solvents, fuels, acids and alkalis; specific environments require verification
- Very low moisture absorption (≤0.02 %) — stable dimensions and performance in humid environments
- High dimensional stability under thermal cycling
Applications
- Electrical housings, terminals and insulators with V-0 requirements
- Automotive under-hood parts: sensors, pump housings, brackets
- Precision gears, bushings and bushing joints
- Pump, valve and fitting components in chemically aggressive environments
- High-temperature connectors and components in power electronics
- Industrial products requiring stiffness and flame retardancy at moderate cost
Processing recommendations
Injection molding. Barrel temperature profile: rear zone 310–335 °C, middle zone 310–340 °C, front zone 315–340 °C; melt temperature 280–320 °C. Mold temperature 85–140 °C. Injection pressure 50–150 MPa, holding pressure 40–90 MPa, back pressure 5–12 MPa. Pre-drying: 2–3 hours at 100–140 °C to a residual moisture content of ≤0.2 %.
