Polyamide 6 for Cable Ties — Examid PA6 P1136
Description
Examid® PA6 P1136 is an injection molding grade of polyamide 6 specifically optimized for series production of cable ties (zip ties, tie-wraps). Grade designation: P — process-stabilized (heat and UV stabilization for outdoor applications), 1136 — internal formulation index with a balance of ratchet tooth sliding and strap tear resistance.
A cable tie is a mass-produced item with a very specific set of requirements: reliable tooth engagement in the head with a “snap and forget” action, stable retention of the assembled bundle without slipping, resistance to impact loads during tightening, and a long service life (5–25 years) in outdoor use. P1136 balances strap stiffness and ratchet tooth elasticity — critical for reliable engagement without subsequent self-release.
Typical parameters: density ~1.13 g/cm³, MFR ~25–35 g/10 min (275 °C / 5 kg — high flow for thin-walled ties), tensile strength ~70 MPa dry (for a 3.6×140 mm tie, breaking force 180 N typical), ~50 MPa conditioned, elongation at break 50–150 % (higher when moist), Tm 220 °C, continuous service temperature −40…+85 °C. UL 94 V-2 (standard).
Key advantages
- Balanced stiffness/elasticity for cable ties — stable engagement without slipping and without ratchet tooth chipping
- UV and heat stabilization — outdoor service (open cable runs, photovoltaic systems, lighting poles, antenna mast structures) for up to 10–15 years
- Fast molding cycle — high-flow grade for mass production of ties 3–9 mm wide
- Easy demolding thanks to an internal lubricant — extends mold life in high-volume production runs
- Additional strap elasticity after moisture conditioning — plasticization of PA6 with water improves tie flexibility without loss of retention (a classic engineering technique for cable ties)
- Impact strength sufficient for tightening and carrying cable bundles
- UL 94 V-2 (self-extinguishing) — meets the basic flame retardancy requirements for electrical cable ties
Limitations
- UL 94 V-2, not V-0 — for FR-critical applications (switchboards, transformer housings) ties made of FR-PA66 or PA12 V-0 are required
- The high water absorption of PA6 (~9 %) makes conditioning of the tie before tightening necessary — in the dry state the strap may break, so performance strongly depends on storage conditions
- Not for cryogenic applications below −40 °C — for arctic ties see Examid® PA6 HI300 or PA12
- Not for chemically aggressive media (ketones, concentrated alkalis) — see PA610 or PA12 ties
Applications
- Electrical installation work: inside automation cabinets, in cable ducts, for harnessing wiring in junction boxes
- Construction and installation work: fastening cables and pipes on construction sites, temporary bundle assembly
- Automotive assembly: harnessing on-board wiring, fastening cooling system hoses and tubes, interior assembly elements
- Outdoor electrical infrastructure: photovoltaic systems (PV field cable monitoring), 4G/5G communication masts, lighting poles, overhead lines — UV-resistant ties
- Industrial assembly and packaging: securing components before shipment, temporary assembly of units on production lines
- Household use: home electrical work, cable management behind computer desks, garden and utility tasks
