Recycled polyethylene (rPE): properties, quality control, applications

Recycled polyethylene (rPE) is one of the most mature recycling streams: the collection infrastructure for film, canisters and pipes has existed for years, and demand is driven by both price and EU regulations on recycled content. But "recycled PE" is not a single material — it is a family of very different streams. Here is when rPE really works, and when caution is required.

What lies behind the words "recycled PE"

The first axis of classification is stream origin. Post-industrial (PIR) regranulate is waste from a manufacturer's own production: flash, trim, restart scrap. It is homogeneous, clean and close to virgin material in properties. Post-consumer (PCR) is collected and reprocessed used packaging and products; it is cheaper and "greener" on paper, but heterogeneous in composition and degradation history.

The second axis is PE type. HDPE (high density) — canisters, crates, pipes, caps; rigid and strong. LDPE/LLDPE (low density) — film, bags; flexible. Density is one of the main characteristics used to distinguish PE grades in practice, since it correlates directly with stiffness and barrier properties. Blending different PE types with each other is acceptable to a wider extent than blending PE with PP, but it still shifts the properties, so "what exactly is in the regranulate" is not a rhetorical question.

How polyethylene degrades during recycling

Every melt-and-solidify cycle and every dose of UV and oxygen over the service life of the original product leaves its mark. Two processes compete in polyethylene: chain scission lowers molecular weight and increases flowability, while crosslinking/branching, on the contrary, raises viscosity. Which one prevails depends on the grade, impurities and processing conditions. The practical consequence is melt flow rate (MFR) drift from batch to batch: this is what most often "breaks" a tuned injection moulding or extrusion process when the incoming feedstock is inconsistent.

That is why the main rule of working with rPE can be stated briefly: do not rely on the stream name alone — measure. Incoming inspection of MFR and density eliminates most surprises before they ever reach the mould.

Quality control: what to measure and by which methods

The European standard EN 15344 describes the characteristics and test methods for PE recyclates intended for the manufacture of semi-finished and finished products. It relies on familiar methods: EN ISO 1133 for melt flow rate (MFR) and EN ISO 1183-1 for density. This is the minimum that should be agreed with the supplier in the specification.

Specific limit values depend on the application and are agreed with the supplier in the specification; "typical for the class" is no substitute for incoming batch inspection.

Where rPE is truly in its element

  • Industrial packaging and logistics: crates, pallets, canisters for non-food products — wherever surface cosmetics are not critical.
  • Construction and infrastructure: drainage and cable-protection pipes, geomembranes, profiles, sheets — bulky products where rPE is highly cost-effective.
  • Second-life film: refuse bags, industrial and construction film made from rLDPE/rLLDPE.
  • Garden and urban equipment: containers, benches, fencing, "wood-plastic composites".
  • Hidden inner layers: in multilayer products, rPE can serve as the core layer between virgin skins.

The general rule: the less critical a part is with respect to appearance, food contact and precise mechanical properties, the higher the share of rPE it will accept without loss of function.

Application limits — honestly

rPE is not omnipotent. Food contact is strictly regulated and usually requires certified streams or virgin barrier layers. Critical pressure pipes, where long-term durability under pressure is calculated, require controlled feedstock. Cosmetically flawless or colour-accurate products are hard to make from PCR without compromises. And the higher the post-consumer share in the blend, the more important stable incoming inspection becomes. None of this is a reason to give up on rPE — it is a list of places where it must be dosed deliberately.

What to check before serial production with rPE

  • Stream type and origin: PIR or PCR, HDPE or LDPE — fix it in the specification, not "by word of mouth".
  • Batch MFR (EN ISO 1133): track drift; agree an acceptable range with the supplier.
  • Density (EN ISO 1183-1): control the composition of the PE blend.
  • Drying and volatiles: check moisture content to avoid surface defects.
  • Foreign impurities: assess the content of other polymers and mineral inclusions.
  • Cosmetics and colour: accept the realistic level of ΔE/inclusions for your product.
  • Regulatory requirements: for food contact — only certified streams or barrier solutions.

How does post-industrial differ from post-consumer rPE?

In origin and homogeneity. PIR is clean waste from a manufacturer's own production, close to virgin material in properties. This choice determines both the price and the required level of incoming inspection.

Why does rPE batch quality fluctuate?

Because of polyethylene degradation: chain scission and crosslinking change the molecular weight — and therefore MFR and viscosity — from batch to batch. MFR drift is what most often disrupts a tuned process. The solution is incoming inspection per EN ISO 1133 and an agreed range in the specification.

Which standard covers rPE quality control?

EN 15344 — characterisation of PE recyclates; it references EN ISO 1133 (MFR) and EN ISO 1183-1 (density). This is the basic parameter set worth writing into the supplier contract.

Can rPE be used for food packaging?

Only from certified streams or with virgin barrier layers — food contact is strictly regulated. "Ordinary" PCR without the appropriate certification is not suitable for direct food contact.

Where does rPE deliver the greatest savings without risk?

In bulky products that are not critical with respect to cosmetics or food contact: pipes, profiles, crates, geomembranes, industrial film. There, the recycled content share can be high without loss of function — provided the specification is correct.
