Description

Ultraplen® is the in-house PP compound line of Material Wizard: modified polypropylene compositions with improved rheology, an extended processing temperature window and an optimized stiffness/elasticity balance for injection molding and extrusion.

The base grade Ultraplen® PP (unfilled homopolymer) is presented in this card. It combines the high clarity of its spherulitic structure, a low density of 0.90 g/cm³ and resistance to deformation under flexural loading. It is used both as a stand-alone structural material and as the polymer matrix for specialized filled Ultraplen® grades.

Full Ultraplen® line (current catalog)

Ultraplen® PP — base unfilled modified homopolymer (this card)

Description

Ultraplen® PPMF40 is a mineral-filled polypropylene with 40 % talc from Material Wizard. An injection molding compound on a homopolymer PP matrix with 40 % fine-particle talc (D50 ~3–5 µm) and an optimized compatibilizer package. Developed as a cost-effective technical alternative to glass-filled PP in applications where the critical requirements are a smooth glossy surface with no visible fiber, isotropic shrinkage, increased heat resistance and high impact strength at moderate stiffness.

Why mineral rather than glass — the technical logic

Isotropic shrinkage (~0.9–1.2 % in all directions) versus the strong anisotropy of GF compounds — critical for flat and large-area parts (instrument panels, trim covers).

Clean surface without white streaks — well suited for cosmetic parts without subsequent painting / texturing.

Better impact balance at equal stiffness — talc acts as a crystallization nucleating agent, increasing impact strength.

Lower abrasive load on the screw and mold compared with GF — extends tooling life.

Cost 15–25 % lower than a comparable GF-filled PP.

Advantages

Increased stiffness with a modulus of 3.5–4.5 GPa while retaining the impact strength of a PP homopolymer

Isotropic shrinkage — minimal warpage in flat and large parts

Smooth glossy surface of the finished part with no visible flow lines

Good heat resistance for parts operating briefly at 100–120 °C

Low wear of tooling and screw — extends mold life by 2–3 times vs a GF compound

Can be colored in any shades without the dark tint of fiber showing through

Low water absorption — dimensional stability in any climate

EU 10/2011 compliance for food-contact applications (on request)

Limitations — honestly

Stiffness lower than Ultraplen® 530 (GF30) — 4 GPa modulus vs 7 GPa. For loaded structural parts choose a GF compound.

HDT/A (1.8 MPa) ~75 °C — parts operating under load above 80 °C require GF compounds or PA

Brittleness at sub-zero temperatures — outdoor applications in cold climates require an EPDM impact modifier

UV-unstable in the base formulation — a HALS package is added for outdoor use

Base grade is HB — for FR applications switch to Ultraplen® 600 (V-2)

Talc sedimentation during prolonged melt residence — processing regimes must maintain constant mixing

Target applications

Home appliances: vacuum cleaner housings, bases and lids of kitchen appliances, fan housings, food storage containers (food-contact package on request), refrigerator parts.

Automotive (interior): instrument panel trim, door trim, center consoles, sill trim, trunk compartment elements, holders and guides.

Industrial packaging: technical containers, pallets, storage crates, IBC lids with increased stiffness.

Electrical engineering: junction box housings (without FR requirements), cable organizers, mounting chassis for low-voltage systems.

Furniture industry: structural elements of office furniture, drawer slide guides, wall-mounting bases.

Description

Ultraplen® 600 — a self-extinguishing UL 94 V-2 class polypropylene from Material Wizard. An injection-molding PP compound with a highly effective flame-retardant system and an optimized antioxidant package for long-term heat resistance. Intended for parts requiring flammability class V-2 at 1.6 mm, low smoke emission and an affordable price — typical segment: electrical enclosures, white goods, low-risk lighting fixtures.

Decoding the flammability rating — what exactly V-2 provides

UL 94 V-2 = the specimen self-extinguishes within ≤30 s after removal of the flame source; flaming drips capable of igniting the cotton indicator are permitted.

V-0 vs V-1 vs V-2: V-0 — extinguishing within ≤10 s, no flaming drips; V-1 — ≤30 s, no flaming drips; V-2 — ≤30 s, flaming drips permitted.

Where V-2 is sufficient: internal parts of electrical appliances without direct contact with ignitable surfaces, socket housings without horizontal load from above, cable organizers in non-combustible risers.

Where V-2 is not enough — V-0 is required: enclosures in risers containing ignitable materials, parts exposed to direct flame in standardized tests (UL 1694, glow-wire 960 °C), railway applications per EN 45545.

Advantages

Guaranteed V-2 with a cost-effective formulation — typically 3–4 times cheaper than PA66 V-0

Low density of 1.05 g/cm³ — lightweight finished parts

High flowability for filling thin-walled housings of 0.8–1.2 mm

Can be colored to standard RAL/Pantone shades (subject to compatibility with the FR package)

Low smoke emission and low combustion toxicity — compliant with IEC 60695-11-10 and IEC 60707

Stable flame-retardant package performance after 5+ recycling cycles of production offcuts (up to 20 % regrind)

Limitations — honestly

V-2 only, not V-0. V-0 at 1.6 mm requires either a thick-walled design or a switch to Ultraplen® FR-V0 (made to order), PA6 V-0 or PC FR.

Flaming drips are permitted — incompatible with applications above ignitable surfaces

Low heat resistance, HDT/A ~55 °C — not for under-hood spaces, housings with high-power active electronics, or contact with hot surfaces >90 °C

UV-unstable in the base formulation — a HALS package is added for outdoor use

Reduced impact strength at sub-zero temperatures — an EPDM cap is required for cold climates

The FR package increases sensitivity to stress cracking in contact with solvents

Not for food contact in the base formulation — FR additives rule out certification per EU 10/2011

Target applications

Low-risk electrical engineering: housings for sockets, switches and surface-mounted junction boxes, cable organizers and holders, distribution box housings up to 16 A, low-risk IT rack components.

Home appliances: internal housing components of toasters, kettles (non-working area), fans and lighting fixtures, coffee machine components (with no contact with the hot zone).

Lighting: housings for household and office LED luminaires, diffusers (transparent V-2 grade on request), mounting brackets.

Transport (interior): automotive interior trim with FMVSS 302 requirements, railway interior elements (separate grades are required for EN 45545), interior parts for metro/electric transport with low fire load.

Industrial packaging: pallets and containers for storing electronic components with FR requirements, technical boxes for electrical equipment.

Global equivalents

Description

Ultraplen® 530 — 30 % glass-fiber-filled polypropylene from Material Wizard. An injection-molding compound based on a polypropylene matrix, reinforced with 30 % chopped glass fiber and a compatibilizer (MAH-PP). Developed as a cost-effective engineering alternative to glass-filled PA GF for parts that require structural stiffness, dimensional stability in humid environments and corrosion resistance — at one third of the cost and 1.5 times lower density.

Why Ultraplen® 530 instead of PA66 GF30

Stability in water: PP+GF does not absorb moisture (<0.05 % in 24 h) — modulus and dimensions remain stable without drying straight after molding. PA66 GF30 loses up to 30 % of its modulus at moisture saturation and requires conditioning.

Lower density: 1.12 g/cm³ vs 1.35 g/cm³ for PA66 GF30 — part weight savings of ~15 %.

Raw material cost: 2.5–3.5 times lower than imported PA66 GF30 at comparable stiffness for parts operating below 100 °C.

Chemical resistance: resistant to dilute acids, alkalis and aqueous salt solutions — outperforms PA in aggressive water storage and transport environments.

Advantages

Structural stiffness with a 6–7 GPa modulus at low density — high specific modulus

Dimensional stability under high humidity and in contact with water

Low creep tendency at moderate temperatures (up to 80 °C continuous)

Good chemical resistance to oils, gasoline, aqueous salt solutions, dilute acids and alkalis

Compatible with standard PP injection-molding tooling without modification

Low VOC content — compliance with EU 10/2011 for food-contact applications

Color matching to any RAL/Pantone shade (minimum base batch 25 kg)

Limitations — honestly

Not for temperatures >100 °C continuous — for under-hood applications or hot liquids choose PA66 GF, PPS or PPA

Shrinkage anisotropy along fiber flow lines — requires well-considered gate placement and adequate wall thickness (minimum 1.5 mm)

Visible fiber on the surface of thin-walled parts (white streaks) — cosmetic applications require surface finishing (texture / post-processing / painting)

The base grade is rated UL 94 HB — for V-2 / V-0 switch to Ultraplen® 600 (V-2) or combined FR-PA

Lower toughness at -20 °C than unfilled PP — cold-climate use requires modification (EPDM cap or impact modifier)

UV-unstable in the base formulation — a HALS package is added for outdoor use (optional)

Target applications

Water supply and sanitary equipment: cold-water pump housings, impellers, fittings, filter housings, water meter components, mounting brackets for piping.

Household appliances: internal structural parts of washing machines and dishwashers (where there is no contact with boiling water), fan housings, cooker hood bases, food processor components.

Industry: industrial fan impellers, pump housings for aggressive liquids (at up to 80 °C), technical covers, conveyor mounting elements.

Automotive (interior and cabin): ventilation system brackets, trim holders, air vent housings, cabin hardware components.

Agriculture: fertilizer dispenser housings, irrigation system fittings, greenhouse equipment components, fasteners.
